It really had to do with keymaps. % $ ! work cause they seem to be at the same location in almost every US + international keyboards.

It wouldn't be a lot of text, and I think that Jari would prefer his wording. He would have to verify it anyway.

and also possibly some observation about characters which should
be avoided in the passphrase.

this has nothing to do with AES and it is still unclear if my suspicion
regarding "strange characters" is responsible for your problem here. try
the same thing with /usr/bin/passwd and see if it is accepting "strange
chacacters".

It has nothing to do with AES but it is related to it, and can cause a lot of headache.
