I don't think I answered part of your question:

I'm currently targeting the framework itself to be built using automake, and
support Linux and at least a few non-Linux platforms.  The framework itself
should work on any of the supported platforms, and should treat all
platforms roughly the same.

I currently expect the list of supported platforms to include these OSes:
	Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris.

This list could expand or contract depending on the resources the
development community applies to the project.  Some components may require
OS modules which are only available on certain platforms.
