With the holidays coming up, I thought it might be fun for people to
post thier Christmas "wish lists". No, I don't mean that new GPS unit or
whatever, I mean in terms of aviation software for Linux. I'll create a
new "Wanted Software" section in the next release of the Linux Aviation
HOWTO using the best responses. To start things off;

   - Wanted: Hardware independent GPS interface software.

Details; The problem with existing GPS interface software is that
it usually is designed for units from a specific manufacturer.
The idea would be to develop a new software API layer for hiding
the details of the actual (proprietary) protocol being used. The
API would provide functions for uploading waypoints, routes, and
downloading of tracks, etc. A device independent user interface
could then be built on top of the API (much like what SANE does
       for scanners).

Later, John

*** How about a standardized API for doing DUATS-type stuff, e.g., getting
weather reports and filing flight plans? I've seen at least one TCL script
for doing this, but DUATS alas changes their format occasionally - such
scripts are always out of date. Also, there are at least two different
DUATS services.

Such an API/"driver" could be a nice building block towards creating
industrial-strength flight planning S/W.

FWIW,

I received my copy of the (US) National Airspace Data CD-ROM last
week. For those that were interested in it, here is a little snapshot
of what is on it...

First off, the $36 cost included shipping by FedEx Overnight, so
delivery is timely. Looks like they come out about 3 weeks ahead of
the time the data is considered effective. (The CD was stamped with
1 Jan, 2000 as the "effective date"). Curiously, I got another CD on
Monday of this week to correct an error in one of the files, not bad!

The CD does indeed contain all the data files they describe on
their web site. They are all simple ASCII files, with fixed length
records. Documentation is included describing each of the files.
There are no "comma delimited" format files on the CD-ROM, like
those that were available for free download at one time.

I hope to have the avdbtools software fixed sometime after the
holidays and get the US database files on the fplan web site updated.
(It will also contain the new year 2000 IGRF and WMM coefficents for
the magnetic variation model). I have looked everything over, and it
doesn't look like the changes required are very radical, but I really
won't have much free time until after the holiday crush.

To keep the work involved to the minimum, my plan is to write new
awk scripts to generate intermediate files with "colon separated"
fields, similar to the old "comma separated" ones. I looked at the
awk scripts that were used to generate the old comma separated files
and quickly concluded that "," is a bad choice for a field separator.
Any "," characters that actually appeared in the data were being
silently deleted! Not a good idea if you can avoid it. By using colon
for a separator, you can simply re map any that actually appear in
the data files to a semicolon using sed, without really changing
anything (the record length in particular). It appears they are only
used for punctuation in remarks, so no big deal. I'll probably only
extract the data fields required by the fplan format files to keep
things simple. However, if anyone has an interest in using these
scripts for other purposes, let me know and I can add additional data
fields.

Seasons Greetings, John

Is there a plan to make this set as a whole in the original format
avalible on the net?

Is there any copyright or legal limitation preventing this?

I nobody else is interested I'll spring for a copy if someone
else has the space on a permanent FTP site.

Provided it's legal, I would love to have a complete iso image to

The "raw" fixed length record files are really HUGE to put
it mildly. But, given that they contain *tons* of blanks, they can
probably be compressed quite a bit with (b|g)zip. I dont have the CD
handy, but I can post a file listing and some compression stats after
I get home this evening.

Unfortunately, the resources I'm given for the fplan web site
won't be enough in any case. As it is, I barely have enough space
for the compressed versions formatted for fplan. But, if anyone on
the list has extra server space and bandwidth, please speak up and
let us know!

> Is there any copyright or legal limitation preventing this?
>

I did not see any files on the CD that resembled a license
agreement. When I get time, I am going to ask Katherine Spencer,
the FAA contact, about this issue since it is relevant to the
redistribution of the fplan format files. I'll let you know...

I'm a little surprised by the sudden interest in the "raw"
data. Just curious about what people plan on doing with it????

John

Would be useful for car travels, especially in a wearable with GPS.

I didn't include the text, but here is what I would plan to
look into doing with the data..

I have a bunch of GPS rcvrs, they are dirt cheap and small.
I would like to build a system around them.
They are not whole navigation units, just the rcvrs, I'd like
to build a system to provide many of the same features of the
high end certified units, but also stuff like telephone numbers,
FBOs and a picture of what the layout of a given airport
should look like from my present location.

All that data necessary is there.

Last time I compresed these files down from the tapes themselves
they packed down over 90%

Some judicious processing could pack it down MUCH further by
encoding given fields and packed into Flash Memory.

I have a BUNCH of 8 Megabyte Modules to do this with.

Other stuff would be handy, like "List the frequencies of
all the Navaids I could reasonably expect to pick up from
my current location and alt."

Other stuff could be "Plan a flight from here to Miami and
make sure every every airport has either a GPS approach
or does not require a REAL DME"

Stuff like that.

I may be able to help with the FTP availability. (1) What is the total
size, and (2) can you tell me for certain that there is no copyright
problems?

FWIW
I have found a bar '|' better then a colon ':'
as a separator when dealing with geographic
data in that often a colon is used as in.

*** Well, I hadn't thought of this, but.....

I have a Lowrance Airmap. It's sat peacefully in my flight bag for a
couple of years. Somehow, at some point in time, it got a little confused,
and - well - the database got scrambled and then went away. So now I have
an Airmap with no database. It still shows land and water features, just no
airports, navaids, or Special Use Airspace.

Given that the thing is just for VFR navigation, maybe I could just convert
the government data and load it in.

  Will check on this...

I tried compressing the "raw" NASD fixed length record data files.
The original files are indeed pretty BIG (total > 245 MB). The good
news is that I found out they will compress much better than I had first
guessed. They compress to as little as roughly 3% of the original size
(using bzip2 compression). I calculated a histogram of the "apt.txt"
file and found that 87.3% of the characters are blanks, so these ratios
are not too surprising in view of that. Using bzip2, all the data is
less than 8 MB! Here's the nitty-gritty:

gzip compression stats:

Is this what we're talking about?

Does anybody have a screenshot of a plotted map from the dataset?

I may be completely wrong on this, but my understanding is that NO federal
government produced data can be copyrighted by the govt in any way. I.e. If
the government produced it, you can copy it all you like. Although I don't
know this for certain. I believe it is an exception in the copyright act.

I'm interested in this problem as well, and have even already
experimented with some possible approaches. Here's a few ramblings
that come to mind;

Now that DUATS finally has a web interface, the whole problem more
or less reduces to one of fetching web pages, and extracting selected
information of interest. This problem is one of general interest to a
broad spectrum of people (e.g. snatching stock quotes from multiple
web pages and writing them to a file). I've found several free
software packages for doing these kinds of things. Some do a better
job than others when it comes to addressing the "change of format
problem" you mentioned. I dont have all my notes handy, but here are
a few examples;

	WebL
	  http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/WebL/

	Webpluck
	  http://www.edsgarage.com/projects/webpluck/

	NoDose
	  http://www.cs.nwu.edu/~adelberg/nodose/nodose.html

I've played some with the aviation weather observations and forecasts
that NOAA/NWS provides over the web, and found them to be fairly easy
to work with. I've already written some crude shell scripts that I
run regularly out of my crontab. They fetch pages with "lynx -dump",
and then extract the desired data with "gawk". Writing "robot
software" to interface with DUATS will be a bit trickier since
cookies are being used to identify who you are. (And no passwd
security I might add, Jeez!)

Any other Xmas wishes??? Only 9 days until Santa comes :^)

Later, John

attached find a simple python script that will get
weather reports

I am sure we could easily interface with DUATS also
as python has a simple to use 'cookie' interface.

If you're going to interface with DUATS, you might as well use the
telnet interface. It's got built in documented facilities for batch mode
use, including download of weather graphics. That's pretty much all that
the web version is - just a front end on the telnet/dialup version.

I'm not familiar with the telnet version of DUATS (yeah, I'm lazy on that
one). To those in the know, could this be handled with an expect script,
or is it more involved than that?

Greetings.

Xybernaut Corporation, has announced "the general availability and
initial sales of its Mobile Assistant(R) IV (MA IV(TM)) running the
Linux operating system."

It might be useful in the cockpit. I haven't tried it. I saw it in
Linux Weekly News.

Sort of related to this. I want my R/C plane outfitted with telemtry
equipment so from the ground I can record real time position,
orientation, velocities, accelerations, etc. Then I want to feed this
into my flight sim project (flight gear) and be able to fly the plane
entirely from the virtual view drawn on the monitor. It would be fun
to combine this with a live video shot looking forward from the plane,
also transmitted to the ground. Then it would be fun to do this at
night, or on a really low visibility day. It would be fun to combine
this with an autopilot and have the airplane fly itself cross country.
I don't want to hear what the FAA would say about this, but it would
be fun anyway. :-)

Nathan, when you get a chance, could you tell us where the
documentation is for this? Working with a supported interface seems
like the best approach for DUATS. A technical aside on this. The
newer versions of Don Libes' expect package have a new tool (well,
new to me), called "autoexpect". It "watches" a sample interactive
session and builds the expect script for you. Makes a great starting
point vs constructing a script from scratch by hand.

On the other hand, I would not recommend abandoning the idea of
using web accessible (e.g. http) documents in this tool. DUATS is not
all encompassing in terms of the information that is available out
there. The most obvious example would be for non-US pilots, to whom
DUATS is meaningless. Small or private airports are another example,
NOAA / NWS might be your only source for observations. I find the
radar and satellite "loops" at www.intellicast.com to be very
useful. The local soaring forecast for my area is another example,
it's only accessible over the web (or voice telephone call). Anyhow,
you get the idea. The tool should provide access to a wide variety of
information.

Thanks for the info Michael. The company Linus works for is due
to "draw the curtains" on Jan 19th, 2000. As rumors have suggested
that it's a platform for mobile computing, there might be some very
useful developments there for Linux based aviation applications.

I like yours(idea) better :-)

my approach would fall way short of your requirements.
i would only have angles across two axi's from a central origin(launch pad)
i lost a really good rocket this past summer in argonia. I found it last month at a
different launch.
the fields had been shall we say PLOWED.

for what your thinking you would also need distance.

No, it isn't. Look at the source.

Moreover, the processor details has been leaked elsewhere. Looks
pretty interesting, let's wait for the benchmarks.

Down in Victoria (An Australian state) there is a plane that does this
already. There is a NOTAM out to this effect. It is currently being used as
a prototype to gather weather information. It is so small, it gets launched
from a 4x4. It has been used in Antarctica also.

telnet duat.gtefsd.com

Enter "6" at the main menu, (service information)

Then look at 1 and 2. #2 has tons of info on 'quick path' including examples
for offline automated briefings.
