I a lot of ways the data formats and presumptions shown are "mainframeish" and screwy IMHO. My approach is to use Perl to parse the text files, something it's VERY good at and stuff it into a database for real work. My current job is parsing and quality assurance for this same data as purchased from THE commercial dist. for this data and build a datamart to build our "Data" products to update a wide range of FMS systems. I Won't say any more than that aside from the fact my current "Real" is job doing this same kind of parsing on essentialy the same data. I should be able to avoid any conflicts of interest since the source data is pretty much free from the feds and there sure is no conflict as to the customers. I think my perl code is kicking around someplace out there in cyberspace and I learned a few things that should help with the second version. What I was trying to save was the huge download. If you put the stuff in CVS, users don't need to download the entire zip every time, just the (relatively small) diffs. I applied for a SourcFeorge project to store the files and provide automatic diffs.
