I think this is rather poor... especially the comment about piracy...

I anyone here is interested in collaboration on reverse engineering the data
format of the databases so it won't require windows to use, let me know, and
I'll be happy to work on it with ya.

Dear Nathan,

Thanks for the offer. The application will be an executable as we do not
want to provide our "raw" database for public consumption and open to
pirating. Our intent is that members can download the files to their PC, and
sort, print, and sync data to their PDA, and eventually receive updates that
will install "invisibly" to their computers. I'm no computer expert by any
means, but the firm who is helping us with the project has invested
considerable thought and time in the project in order to help us provide the
best possible application for use by AOPA members.

Best regards,

Machteld Smith

When you make it downloadable to the PC, please do not JUST make it an
.exe. It would be highly appreciated if you would also make the raw data
downloadable by itself for those of us who choose to use an operating
system other than microsoft windows.

In fact, I would recommend that you make the 'application download'
distinct from the 'data download' for the PC and PDA apps any way, that
way people don't have to download a new executable just to update their
databases.

If you would like any additional information or suggestions about how to
structure the data, etc. please feel free to contact me, I'll be more
than happy to provide any assistance necessary, including making a
Unix/Linux application to view the airport data equivalent to your
windows version if you are interested.

I wonder if this would be tough at all anyway? If they
are shortsighted enough to only think in Windows terms,
they probably are just using Excel!

Excel runs on Mac too. StarOffice will handle Excel sheets on Linux if
that is what they are doing but I wouldn't bet money on it.
