Hi there..

I'm looking for a good source for these things...

Would be nice if it had a serial interface similar to the LCD units...

Thanks,

Thomas Weeks

What "Kind" of serial interface?

Most LCD panels have a "Serial" interface, but it is nothing like an RS-232
data stream.

To get a decent HUD display you will need a bright source.

Only current stuff I can think of that should work are:

LED displays.
Flourescent Displays.
CRTs
or EL displays.

There is a guy currently selling touch screen industrial computers on EBAY
that have a sunlight readable, light emitting "EL" display which is supposedly
of VGA resolution.

They MAY be bright enough.

The CRT Tubes are going to be "Thick" and would need to be mounted down in the panel.

There are matrix Flouro' displays that are similar to the 2 X 16, 4 X 20 hitachi type
Character LCD displays and sometimes you can find units that have the same interface.
as such you should be able to attach them to one of the RS-232 Converters places like
BG Micro Sells.

BG Micro also has sunlight readable LED Matrix displays that are packed in ceramic
DIP IC type cases with glass tops. Once you see one, you will realize they are the same
diplays a LOT of '70s and '80s avionics used.
They are 4 character 5 X 7 Matrix diplays with a "Serial" interface. They need a constant
flow of data to keem them refreshed but a cheap uController like a PIC could easily do it.

I think these same type of displays are the ones used in the small speed/heading display
that runs off a GPS input and is designed to mount right on the panel between instruments.
