Um..

I vote that we use Java for this purpose if we are looking for cross
platform support...  It's a bit slower than some of the scripting
languages but it's well supported across a large cross section of
hardware platforms and OS's.

If not, then Perl is my second choice.  You can use Perl routines from
within other programs and Perl is fairly fast.

My third choice would be C or C++ for the reasons given by Nathan.
