Step 1: understand the kernel / distribution (distro) conceptual relationship.
Step 2: Find out what distro your office is using.
Step 3: Ask on a normal linux users group mailing where to get a copy
of that or a free equivalent.
Step 4: Gain an understanding of linux user space tools, including how
to compile them, modify them, etc. (Could take years if you're not a
programmer.)
Step 5: Come back to this mailing list and start your adventure into
kernel hacking.
