I suspect that is way too general of a question, but read performance
is impacted by:
filesystem (ext2 / xfs / reiserfs / etc.)
filesize / fragmentation
cache size
hardware bus (ide / sata / scsi / ramdisk / usb / firewire) including
rotation speed / seek times
cache sizes (os / controller / drive)
raid setup (this can get complex)
hardware errors (especially with raid, you want to fail fast on get
the data from an alternate source)
Maybe that will help you ask a more informative question.
