how does an initramfs handle the "root=" boot time param?

i'm reading the "init" script contained in my current kernel's
initramfs, and i can see how installing that kernel ran a post-install
script that created "init" and hard-coded it to refer to my actual
root filesystem.

so what happens when i boot and specify an alternate root FS with
"root="? somehow, that has to override the hardcoded partition name
in "init", no? when is that done? thanks.
