Automatically? How? Anything which you haven't marked as module in your compilation cannot be built even for your initrd. Initrd can take modules only present in your /lib/modules/kernel-version-you-compiled AFAIK.
i haven't looked at it closely (yet), but i could swear that that's how it used to work.
