just how important are POSIX message queues?

i'm curious about the inherent necessity of POSIX message queues.
according to its help info, "To use this feature you will also need
mqueue library, available from
http://www.mat.uni.torun.pl/~wrona/posix_ipc/>." and yet, that same
help info suggests, "If unsure, say Y."

it's not clear to me why a feature that *requires* you to download
some third-party software should be recommended for selection. is
this feature really that critically important?
