graphic cards drivers on linux

Hi,
What is the fundamental difference between Xfree86 device drivers (see http://www.xfree86.org/current/DESIGN20.html) and the linux drivers that can be found in the linux kernel under ./drivers/video ?
does a given graphic card needs both drivers?
