inconsistent file structure during boot up!!!

Hi all
I was working on my regular KDE session, when my system abruptly
switched off because of a power failure.
The next time i booted, i see kernel loaded ok but no further advance
and a seemingly unfriendly line greets me "unconsistent file structure
detected " .

This repeated around 4-5 times when i tried rebooting.
then i tried booting my windows which also failed( no surprises here
although :)).
Immediately on rebooting my linux kernel booted fine, recovered
journal and there i go writing to you all from my Linux machine.

I have FC5 installed with vanilla kernel 2.6.16.

Can anybody send me links or hints on why this happened?
And then why it recovered without any help?

Strangely windows flashed me a prompt saying "cannot find some
hal.system32 ( i am not sure but hal was there ) file" on the contrary
the regular "ntoskrnl file missing error" :).

An insight or pointers into how a filesystem recovers after a power
loss would be appreciated and possible course which took place in my
system .
