After you won't able to find any log messeges ! Try to test this on
kernel compiled with kdb so that when you got crash it will go into
kdb and will give you prompt to take a look at the log messages !
(Actually I can't test it currently on uni-processor kernel with
preemption enabled and kdb as I don't have machine ready for this now
:( )

Means you can only get preemption (enabling SMP is of no use for you).
Are you testing from the terminal without running X ? or getting this
problem with X running ?
