Introducing a Creative New Pianist and Composer!

Reviewer: Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States), May 12, 2005
Bill Walker's first recording of his own musical compositions performed with Walker on the piano, and assisted by Ahaguna G. Sun on drums, Juan Nelson on Bass, and Mick Valentino on Guitar set a very high standard. Walker is a fine pianist, able to coax both brilliance of execution as well as warmth of _expression_ from the keyboard. His classical training serves him well, even though there are no traditionally classical works on this substantive CD to prove the point. His technique is solid.

The music he composes falls into the ever-changing category of 'New Age' (and who knows when the 'new' of that designation will wear out?)- music that is not ballad or rock or soul or R&B. It is music for moods and the moods Walker establishes are quite fine. Enhancing the full texture of these works are manipulated excerpts of full orchestral music gleaned by Tim Price and Bob Ravenscroft from the Vienna Symphony Library. Not bad fellow travelers! Where most composers and practitioners of this school of music rely on the electric keyboards to mimic strings and other instruments, Walker calls upon the 'real thing' to create a lovely, rich tonal palette.

Comparisons always rear their heads when a newcomer releases his first work and Yanni and John Tesh are the first to come to mind. But Walker goes beyond these referenced colleagues because of his passion for classical music. The individual works are well conceived and vary enough to be considered individually, instead of just a wash of sound people buy as a mental purgative.

The man has talent and I think we can expect his name to become prominent in the music world of classically inspired mood music. Grady Harp, May 05
