Weird linker behaviour

I've just run into some very strange behaviour. My
linker has suddenly stopped finding shared libraries
in my X11R6 directory. It's there in ld.so.conf anf
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, I've killed ld.so.cache, re-run
ldconfig (in verbose mode: it sees X11R6 and
identifies the libraries), symlinks in /lib work, etc,
but the linker always fails to find libraries in the
X11R6 directory. Can anyone suggest why this should
have spontaneously happened and what I can do about
it? This started happening after a series of mini
power outages got apcupsd confused and caused it to
attempt to shutdown my system. When I restarted, the
apcupsd CGI monitoring program died saying it couldn't
find libXpm. I'm using a 2.4 kernel,
2.4.22-10mdkenterprise under Mandrake 9.2 to be
precise.
