Well, I don't know anything about autofs4 or what you mean by ghosting
(since it seems you don't mean imaging a complete O.S. installation
with the commercial product, Ghost), so I wasn't going to respond.

If you're interested in learning more about locking in the kernel,
though, a couple places to start would be these.  (Do "make psdocs"
beforehand.)

  Documentation/DocBook/kernel-locking.ps

... and if you're interested in virtual memory,
