That's my impression: on x86, if you want to use 0x80000000 as a
virtual address, then instead of looking the translation up through
the page tables starting with the directory cr3 points to, you use
that VA as a key to find the pte in the TLB.

No, it's the pte itself.  A pointer would mean that you'd have to do
more to get the translation, like going to memory, and the gains from
having a TLB wouldn't be as great.
