syncing from magic sysreq key

Hi.  Does anyone here use the magic system request 
key feature to sync disks in case of a kernel crash?

I think this might be a good feature to use, but I 
wonder what's safer -- to sync and unmount the 
filesystems or to just hit the big red button.
