PCI Banshee initialization

Hello,

  Could somebody tell me what is the appropriate way to initialize a 3dfx 
banshee card using only the pci_(read/write)_config_(byte/word/dword) 
functions (and anything else indiginous to typcial PCI systems)?
I've been looking over the manual (http://yaxic.foo.is/docs/banshee_spec.pdf) 
and I can't seem to see any Right Way(tm) of doing it.
