Trouble creating Kernel Image

sir,
I have installed linux 7.0 kernel version 2.2.16-22
in my comp.To get NE2000 support in the kernel I 
use make menuconfig command and made a configuration
file for the kernel in /usr/src/linux-2.2.16
directory.
But when I run make dep,make clean, make zImage
commands i get errors.Make dep command says that there
is nothing to make in
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/arch/i386/boot directory.Pleas
help me to build a kernel Image or atleast find a
driver fot RTL8019as
network card,
