RedHat 7.2 weird phenomenon

Hi folks,

I have a RedHat 7.2 system at home.
I downloaded a clean linux-2.4.18 from www.kernel.org and compile it with built in ext3 and jbd support.

Weird things happen upon boot time, the system seems to attempt to load something related to /lib/ext3.o and kernel panic happened.

I try recompile the kernel with ext3 and jbd support as modules and everything is fine.

I checked out /etc/modules.conf and there is no trace of ext3 at all.

My question is why is the weird phenomenon happening ? Which script or config files determine what modules to get loaded at boot time ?
