Disk I/O

Hi all
As part of my Linux course, I am studying the disk I/O mechanism in Linux.
We start from read() and then follow the path all the way to do_rw_disk().
I need some information about disk controllers and disks(physical layout)
, I/O ports and interfaces. Can anyone please point me to some resources
online and o'wsie?
