Kernel 2.4.16 on ML8.1

Hi,

I am using an IBM Thinkpad 770

(Pentium II 266 +
Trident Video Accelerator 3D Cyber 9397
IBM MPEG-2 (couldn't find precision, I can't make this one work by the way) video capture
IBM MPEG-2 decoder, same as above
ACP Modem doesn't work either (winmodem ?)

I tried to recompile the latest stable version 2.4.16 on my Mandrake Linux 8.1 (kernel 2.4.8-16MDK).
I setup all the information using the Xmenu, followed all instructions and rebooted.  The kernel seems to load then the machine simply reboots.
So I tried to recompile the kernel using Mandrake config file (/boot/config-2.4.8-16mdk).  Again, everything went smoothly, apart that it took longer, more modules I suppose.
Again I reboot and again after kernel load (small dotted line on top screen) then laptop reboots.

Is this a bug ?  Is this related to the laptop hardware, mandrake incompatibilty, how can I check what's wrong.
