Belkin Omni Cube, with power supply, supposedly provides keyboard and mouse emulation;
no name keyboard and mouse...

<snip>

I did solve the problem:  (Short story follows, anybody who wants the long story can email me privately)

Mouse:          Not solved, but (1) I rarely use the mouse anyway and (2) I figure it just needs to be reconfigured*.
Keyboard:       Rearranged the cables from the KVM switch.  Not logical, but it works *most* of the time.

Also, using the "hot key" instead of the "push button" to switch seems to be more stable.
Rebooting when the keyboard freezes works.  (At least the keyboard doesn't freeze *every time* I use the switch now.)

* Which begs the question:  Why would my new kernel clobber my mouse?  I've recompiled *several* times now (lost count, actually) and even plugged directly into the box instead of going through the switch; each and every time I end up with the same.  Everything else seems stable.

When I boot back to Linux-2.2.16 from SuSE, all mouse and keyboard problems go away.

Seems to indicate that the SuSE installation had configuration stuff that was lost to Linux-2.4.7-ac9 (?), but I'm such a newbie I have no idea what that might have been...
