Install 2.2.19 and check out if 8139too yields better results. If you 
can't run your application without your kernel-modifications, then 
write a little test-application that hangs rtl8139 the same way as your 
application.

If it works for you, ask Jens David <dg1kjd@afthd.tu-darmstadt.de> 
if it's possible to bring the backported version of 8139too from 
2.2.19 to 2.2.14. He's the one who did the backport of 8139too to 2.2.
