can I compile kernel 2.1.125 using gcc 2.96?

Hi:

I just upgraded to kernel 2.4, Red Hat's 7.1 distribution which uses gcc
2.96
I want to compile the linux kernel V 2.1.125 (i'm doing a project) and i
get the following message when i execute make dep:

make -C ipv6 fastdep
make[4]: Cambiando a directorio `/usr/src/linux-2.1.125/net/ipv6'
/usr/src/linux-2.1.125/scripts/mkdep addrconf.c af_inet6.c datagram.c
exthdrs.c icmp.c ip6_fib.c ip6_fw.c ip6_input.c ip6_output.c ipv6_sockglue.c
mcast.c ndisc.c proc.c protocol.c raw.c reassembly.c route.c sit.c
sysctl_net_ipv6.c tcp_ipv6.c udp.c > .depend
make[4]: *** [fastdep] Error 135
make[4]: Saliendo directorio `/usr/src/linux-2.1.125/net/ipv6'
make[3]: *** [_sfdep_ipv6] Error 2

sory for those of you who don't understand spanish :-)

Cambiando a directorio: switching directory
Saliendo directorio: Exiting directory

I found some posible anwers on the net, but one of them said that is not
possible to compěle kernels 2.0 with gcc 2.95, I was wondering if that's
true also for kernels 2.1.x and gcc 2.96

TIA

Alejandro
