I assume you are trying to download from ftp.kernel.org - have you tried 
one of the sites listed in the "Linux Kernel Archive Mirror System" at
http://www.kernel.org/mirrors/  ?

You should try to download from a site that's geographically close to 
you, that should speed up the download considerably!
