initializing cmd. required

 Hi,

I am new to scsi tapes and I can't get a new drive to work...
 What I am doing is:

# modprobe st.o
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
st: bufsize 32768, wrt 30720, max init. buffers 4, s/g segs 16.

# tar -cf /dev/st0 *
tar: Cannot write to /dev/st0: Input/output error
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

# dmesg
<...snip...>
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
st: bufsize 32768, wrt 30720, max init. buffers 4, s/g segs 16.
ncr53c895-0-<0,*>: asynchronous.
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00:
    sense key Not Ready
Additional sense indicates Logical unit not ready, initializing cmd. required
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00:

I have no idea about ``initializing cmd. required'' told by the
kernel... I find nothing about it on docs.. howtos, faqs, readmes...

 Kernel: 2.4.3
 GNU Tar: 1.13
 SCSI low-level driver: NCR53C8XX
                        (also tried with: SYM53C8XX)

 Thanks in advance,
 (ps: I am not subscribed)
