2.4.3, sym53c895 weirdness

 Hi,
 
  I am new to tape devices and can't get a sym53c8xx (53c895) to work.
  The tape drive was detected:
  scsi0 : sym53c8xx-1.7.3a-20010304
    Vendor: SONY      Model: SDT-7000          Rev: 0300
    Type:   Sequential-Access                  ANSI SCSI revision: 02

 But...
 [aster0] (pts/0:root) [/]# tar -c * > /dev/st0
 tar: Cannot write to -: Input/output error
 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
 
 And at the tail of dmesg:

  sym53c895-0-<0,*>: asynchronous.
  st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00:
  sense key Not Ready
  Additional sense indicates Logical unit not ready,initializing cmd. required
  st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00:
  sense key Not Ready
      
 I dont known what to do about "unit not ready,initializing cmd. required"
