I think it may be prudent to ask the guy who wrote this piece of
code if he could document it a bit ...

I got asked the same about the VM subsystem and have begun
documenting the code. I've stopped documenting this week (no fun
doing lots of documentation at once), but I'll surely pick it up
again later and within the next few months the VM subsystem *will*
be documented properly.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask other people to document
their source code too ;)
