how to bring eth0 up

Hi,
I have compiled 2.2.14 kernel and have booted the same. At the
time of make xconfig, I could not turn the rtl8139 support option on(I
don't know, it wasn't active). So after booting I compiled the rtl8139.c
and loaded the module. But still I am getting network is unreachable
message when I try to do ping. What shall I have to do to have my eth0 up
when I boot the new karnel?

BTW, when I boot the original kernel(also 2.2.14) everything comes up fine
and net is also reachable.

thanks
