For a _very_ detailed discussion of just this problem, see either the
linux-kernel or the linux-usb-devel mailing list this week, as people
there are talking about this right now.

Also you should try the linux-usb-devel mailing list (there is no such
list as usb-users).  Info on joining it is at http://www.linux-usb.org/

And also remember that you are taking GPL code and putting it into a
custom kernel, and all the licensing issues that that entails :)
