hi john,

originally i contacted the author over correcting a couple of minor points
and spelling mistakes. i knew something was amiss when it took 15 minutes
of web searching to get his email address. :)

finally got in touch with him, and he said that he didn't have time to keep
the guide updated. it seemed like a shame because it was obviously a good
guide; it was just outdated and needed some TLC.

ori asked me if i wanted to maintain the guide. i figured at the VERY
LEAST, if someone found a spelling error, at least i'd be around to fix it.
at best, maybe i could use it to learn from by updating it and expanding on
some of his discussions.

so i said yes. :)

he has signed over the copyright to me (well, it's on its way via snail
mail), and that's where i am. :)

as soon as i declare chapter 3 (which was his chapter 2 -- i added a
'preliminaries' chapter) done, i'm taking a 2-4 week break to make sure my
thesis advisor doesn't totally hate me.

i'm thinking of combining his chapters 3+4. aside from source code, his
chap 3 doesn't say very much. i'm using smaller fonts and removing 2.0
support in an effort to get code to span as few pages as possible (i think
having code span pages reduces its clarity).
