Re: character device driver for I/O-card.
you may want to hold off on buying rubini's device driver book.
at least, for a couple of months. a 2nd edition is coming out in may 2001,
and of course it'll cover the 2.4 kernel.
also, an ORA book of interest JUST came out--the linux kernel. i've been
slacking off on my job (just a bit) reading the book. publishing date is
something like feb 2001!
short review:
this book is detailed! actually, more detail than i wanted, but i'm forcing
myself to read every word. the book was obviously written from a computer
scientist's viewpoint in "operating system theory". however, it's cleared
up a lot of questions for me (and now that i know a lot more about memory
management, has opened up a few more questions).
overall, it's a good book, but may not be exactly what a module programmer
is looking for. it doesn't suffer from rubini's "non-linearities" where
topics from left field magically appear in the strangest of places. good
editing.
for those of you in the USA, crown books is going out of business all over
the country. i got the linux kenrel book for 40% off. :-) well, :-( for
the employees, and :-) for me. 700 pages, $40.
