Looks like I'm not the only one to see this.  Linus's changelog for 2.4.0
says:

 - fix drm Makefile to not use the same objects built-in and in a module

So it's been fixed (thanks Keith).  Now all I have to do is actually
download the thing and compare the differences to see how it works.  :-)
(when the local mirror can get it of course.  ftp.kernel.org is swamped)
