   You should check /etc/syslog.conf and see where kern.* `msgs' get
   logged (they may be logged not in /var/log/messages).

   Obviously make sure you're running syslogd and klogd too.

   The priority just specify how to show this msg, i.e. both in console 
   (xconsole?) and in log file (through syslogd/klogd) or just in log file
   (this behaviour depends on the default console log level define).

   To be really sure (and get at least msgs displayed on console (xconsole?))
   just try with a printk statement with the highest priority, i.e.

      printk(KERN_EMERG "Kaboom ;)\n");

   If this statement is reached in some way, you'll see the output 
   at least on console, IMHO.
