Australia To Ban Windows?
July 8, 2001
Two years ago, Australia passed legislation that
effectively outlawed Linux[1]. Now, the nation appears
poised to pass legislation that would effectively throw all
Windows users in jail.
Australia wants to make it illegal to possess "hacking
paraphenalia", including the source code to malicious
viruses[2]. However, every Windows computer connected to the
Internet has undoubtedly received at least one macro virus
coded in Visual Basic.
Thus, millions of users have the source code to a virus
sitting somewhere on their hard drives.
Thus, thousands of email servers have the source code to a
virus sitting in some poor schmuck's inbox.
Thus, hundreds of Internet Service Providers have the
source code to a virus flowing through their network even
as you read this sentence.
The bottom line is that countless Australians could shortly
become criminals because they use Windows. Oh darn.
The developer responsible for integrating Visual Basic into
Microsoft Outlook was unavailable for comment at press
time.
