[humorix] Duel Boot in Linux [was: Ineptitude ... ]
Pegasus,
I hope you don't mind me calling you Pegasus. ;-)
Anyway I've had a duel boot Win 98 and Linux system for a few years now.
Only recently was a forced into using Windoze exclusively as I lost the hard
drive that Linux was installed on. So until the hard drive comes back from
the manufacturer, I'll be using my Win 98 install. Duel boot Linux/Win98 is
simple to set up:
Windoze FDISK should be fine to use to create the partitions. Format the
one you want to use for Windows as FAT32 and just leave the Linux partition
unformatted (no news I'm sure you didn't already know here). Then install
Win 98 first _before_ your favorite Linux dist. is installed. Once Win 98
is installed install Linux to the "Linux" partition and set up LILO (the
LInux LOader) to boot both OS's. The dist's install of LILO should find the
Windows info and ask you if you'd like to be able to boot the Windows OS as
well. If not it's easy to set up in the lilo.conf configuration file (try
the HOW-TO on LILO found at: www.linuxdoc.org for more detailed
instructions) . Installing Win 98 _after_ Linux will overwrite the MBR
(Master Boot Record) and you won't be able to boot the Linux system (in M$'s
infinite "wisdom" they decided no "other" OS would ever reside on the same
machine so they just overwrite the MBR without looking...LILO does not).
Installing Linux after Win98 will take care of that problem, as every Linux
dist. I've ever used/installed (which is most of them) will ask first before
disregarding the other OS.
As for Corel's dist...I haven't used it yet, but I've heard some bad things
about it. All hearsay at this point, but I'm still up for trying it. Might
have to d/l the $5.00 version you've suggested here. Thanks for the info.
As for RH...I'm not a fan of their business practices (though I didn't know
Mr. Gates owned any stock in them). I cut my teeth on RH Linux 4.2 but I've
since stopped using them, because, like I said, I'm not fond of their
business practices and their ideas of what makes a good dist.
Hope this helps, sorry for the off-topic post...I thought it might help some
people out.
