We have a big mobile robot here from a firm called Real World
Interfaces, which is controlled by Linux computers.  You might be
interested in looking at their APIs if you can find them.  I haven't
actually written for the thing myself but people tell me it is quite
nice, and they do seem to be quite widely used.
