I think a mascot should be something cute.  I can't imagine a
very cute chamaleon, though I may be wrong...

How about a cute little snake ?  Drawn manga-style, probably sorta like
the KDE mascot in design.  Snakes can change their skins, so that's
just as applicable :)

Another idea would be a bee, they can cooperate well in groups,
sorta like a distributed system.  Or a fox, for the same reason...
