Well, that would work for serial and parallell ports and the like (ever
tried to install SuSE linux ? It uses a similar probe mechanism to
automatically detect the hardware.) OTOH, for PCI devices this wouldn't be
such a good idea - it's a far better idea to probe the PCI bus, and to only
have the drivers for devices that are on the PCI bus probe. That means
that there needs to be a centralised place which is used to access the PCI
BIOS, ie, a PCI device.
