eheh, when I have proposed the whole LM mechanism, I have already thinked that.
No ids, they are only a waste of time, and easily forgeable. My question was
about LM checking, so something very low-level and crude, absolutely no
cross-platform, without any worry about structure.
On the LM side, the probing mechanism make possible all the about, integrated
with LM version:

the installer/configurator program loads a predefined DB with default LMs
definition (serial and parallel ports are everywhere, so they are preloaded and
listed in this file). Then the installer on user request, scan and loads all LM
files in a standard directory, say /alliance/lm/iosk, and execute for each one
LMprobe function, who reports on actual hardware. Then harvest and digest data,
unload those LMs have failed probing, and on.
